Role Description

XS Soil Solutions Inc. is seeking to fill the exciting and rewarding role of Environmental Field Technician. The Environmental Field Technician will be responsible for onsite field work, conducting environmental assessments, collecting soil samples, monitoring soil movements and conducting site inspections, overseeing construction activities, liaising with laboratories; as well as data analysis, report writing and field coordination in support of major infrastructure projects that are transforming Ontario's landscape. The Environmental Field Technician supports Project Coordinators and Project Managers with various field work and reporting tasks on a multitude of job sites. The ideal candidate for this position will possess strong teamworking, communication and technical skills; and will come from an educational background that has fostered a passion for environmental consulting and field work. Our new hire will be comfortable working independently, will enjoy travelling and spending their time onsite, and will be driven and motivated to work within a vast and dynamic construction project portfolio.

  • Ability to maintain and transport sampling equipment and supplies
  • Willingness to learn and be coached on complex concepts and construction techniques including; tunnel boring, shoring, excavation, infrastructure (LRT) design & construction
  • Willingness to develop and grow in the industry long-term
  • Experience with Field Work, Environmental Consulting or Technical Writing considered an asset
  • Experience with O.Reg. 406/19 (Excess Soil Rules) considered an asset
  • 'Can Do' attitude with a commitment to health & safety
  • Relevant education in Environmental or Civil Engineering (co-op); Geotechnical or Environmental Science background

Project Manager

XS Soil Solutions Inc.  specializes in strategizing practical approaches and cutting-edge applications of the Excess Soil Regulations (O.Reg 406/19). As the industry interprets and implements the Soil Rules, our company is already a step ahead of the curve, thanks to our years of experience, detailed knowledge and practical understanding of O.Reg. 406/19. Our Team of soil management experts and Qualified Persons supports clients in navigating the Regulations with confidence and ease across a variety of projects in Ontario -- from major infrastructure to private construction and receiving sites. We facilitate an exciting and encouraging environment by fostering collaboration, innovation and positive work-life balance.


Our Project Managers lead a team of Project Coordinators and Environmental Technicians to oversee the sampling, analysis and movement of excess soil, and to facilitate the drafting and delivery of regulatory documentation and reports. Project Managers are also responsible for planning and executing the project scope within budget and on schedule.


Responsibilities:

  • Mentor junior staff in the comprehension and application of O.Reg. 153/04 and O. Reg 406/19 requirements
  • Direct, draft and lead the work of technical staff for the completion of the following reports, including but not limited to:
  • Assessment of Past Uses (APU)
  • Sampling & Analysis Plans (SAP)
  • Soil Characterization Reports (SCR)
  • Excess Soil Destination Assessment Reports (ESDAR)
  • Excess Soil Management Plans
  • Fill Management Plans
  • Receiving and Source Site Reviews and Approvals
  • Contamination Management Plans
  • The understanding of the Beneficial Reuse Assessment Tool (BRAT) is required. Having completed a BRAT is considered a benefit
  • Having successfully completed the process of a Records of Site Condition is an asset
  • Having successfully completed the process of obtaining an Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) is a benefit, preferably for contaminated soil/soil transfer is a strong benefit
  • Implement, track and report on monthly soil hauling records, and utilize soil tracking software
  • Ensure deadlines and cost targets are met
  • Efficient and effective technical writing and reporting skills will be a requirement, as well as assistance with template and SOP development
  • Serve as a liaison between Source Sites and Receiving Sites for excess soil movement and management
  • Interpret laboratory data from sampled locations and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Assist with providing cost estimates, budgetary reviews and strategic project pursuit
  • May be required to attend site visits and conduct soil samples, on occasion


Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must have a P.Eng. or P.Geo. license (or the like) with a QP designation, as defined under O.Reg 153/04
  • 5+ years of relevant experience conducting Phase I/II/III ESAs, Project Management and/or excess soil management
  • Strong technical understanding of O.Reg. 153/04 and 406/19
  • Experience in project management
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Analytical and critical thinking capabilities
  • Deadline-focused and detail-oriented approach
  • Organizational and time-management strengths
  • Coaching and leadership qualities
